Capresso 490.05 ST600 Stainless Thermal Coffeemaker

Capresso 490.05 ST600 Stainless Thermal Coffeemaker

Product Description

Conical Burr Grinders preserve the most aromas and can grind very fine and very consistent. The intricate design of the steel burrs allow a high gear reduction to slow down the grinding speed. The slower the speed the less heat is imparted to the ground coffee, thus preserving a maximum amount of aroma. Because of the wide range of grind settings these grinders are ideal for all kinds of coffee equipment such as Espresso, Drip, Percolators, French Press. It can also grind extra fine for the preparation of Turkish coffee. Slowest grinding speed in its class creates less friction and heat build up preserving maximum aroma and flavor in any grind setting Tight fitting ground coffee container, holds up to 4 ounces of ground coffee See-through bean container holds up to 8.8 ounces of beans Timer can be set to grind from 5 to 60 seconds Elegant, timeless and user-friendly design Cleaning brush and measuring scoop included Dimensions - Height 10.8 x Width 5.4 x Length 7.7 Weight - 3.3 pounds

By Manish Laxmikant - See all my reviews

First, I have to thank everyone who reviewed the product for warning me about some of the design issues of the product. I read reviews to look for failings in a product and then buy if the price and performance outweighs known problems.

Now, the review. Five stars. Yes, you need to know where to be careful, but you'll definitely enjoy the coffee.

The important stuff. This is where you have to be careful.
- Unpacking - There's a big "PUSH" label that seems counterintuitive, but I pushed and the receiving drawer came out the back of the styrofoam. I could see how people might break this.

- Assembling - the removable burr wheel needs to be seated, mine wasn't so the hopper didn't seem to fit. Turn the burr until it matches up to the bottom and it drops a fraction of an inch to seat. Line up the black dot on the hopper with the mark on the right and gently push down and twist. The plastic on the hopper and drawer feels weak and flimsy, but it works fine once you have the product going.

- Grinding - 16 settings in groups of four. If 1 is extra fine and 16 is coarse, I found #4 and #5 ideal for espresso. A medium dark roast did better at #4, but a dark roast got too fine and nearly clogged my espresso filter. #13 works great with the Bodum columbia press and a medium roast and leaves barely a pinch of grounds in the poured coffee. As another reviewer said, resist the temptation of turning the timer down to zero and just twist the top to stop the grinding. After two grinds you're trained. Oh, and there is a bit of static in the drawer but it hasn't bothered me much. I like the sharp edge for pouring out the grounds directly into the filter basket.

- Cleaning - remove the burr wheel and dust it into the bottom, then sweep the grounds in the grinder bottom (the part under the hopper) together. I have the whole thing near the bin so I can tip it over. Leave the drawer in to catch what you sweep into the grinding mechanism. The brush they provide is small, but I haven't had a problem.

I thought I was happy with my blade grinder, because I'd add cream and sugar to my espresso and it tasted great. But now I'm even happier because I can actually drink the espresso and french-pressed coffee straight, black. I still add a bit of cream and sugar but I'm fascinated that a sugar-head like me can drink the coffee straight.

My theory is that while a good blade grinder can make fine grounds by cutting into the coffee well, coffee shards tend to form a structure inside the espresso filter and channel water through the same tubes of coffee, pulling the bitters along because of overexposure. And a quicker path through the filter results in incomplete brewing, and, bitterness. You can tell that the blade-ground coffee creates an initial resistance and then thinner coffee flows faster.

With burr ground coffee, there are no shards over the size allowed to fall into the drawer. The espresso cake left in the filter, when dry, is uniformly packed (and not pitted or spongy like the blade-ground coffee). The espresso flows consistently, slowly and almost like syrup.

The biggest difference is the taste. You drink the unadulterated espresso and wait for a bitter backtaste, which doesn't come. That is a perfect shot, and your blade grinder will not give you this. Unless you want to buy a strainer and sift out the coarser shards hiding in your blade-ground coffee (that _will_ work, if you don't want to pony up the cost of this grinder).

Reviews By MB (Scotts Valley, CA United States)

If you're like me, even when you don't buy from Amazon you include its reviews when buying a product, and in the process, you're often left wondering what and who to believe with a product that has mixed reviews and a big discount. I don't usually write reviews, but given the doubts I had before this purchase due the negative reviews, I thought I'd help others out and set the record straight.

Cutting to the chase, this is a great coffee maker, especially for the price. With all due respect, I cannot for the life of me figure out how people have any issue with this machine. Learning curve? Are you kidding me? Slip the carafe in, push the on button. If you can figure out how to plug it in, you can figure out how to use it. There are several aspects to its design that keep coffee from ending up on your counter. It won't fit in place unless the lid is lined up the right way and if it doesn't fit in right, coffee doesn't flow.

Does it take a moment or two to figure out the alignment, or maybe a quick read of the manual if it's not immediately obvious to you? Sure. Probably. It's not like any other coffee makers you or I have used. But some of the reviews made me think I'd be living through countless messes before getting the hang of it. I found the design to be very consumer centric (the politically correct way of saying idiot proof)

One reason I wanted to write this review is that years ago I purchased a vacuum coffee maker that originally sold for a $200 but was being given away by Starbucks for under $50. I was convinced there had to be something wrong with it given the huge discount, but they told me that it was just too "complicated" for some people and they didn't get it (makes coffee much differently than drip). Same deal. Best maker I owned but enough people returned it that it was discontinued. Never had a single issue with it until it gave out after 4 years.

I can't comment on defective units or longevity, but I can tell you the design is sound, the coffee is great (I too notice I don't need to use as much coffee for a great, strong brew, which means also a less bitter one), the unit looks great, the thermal carafe keeps the coffee hot, and I like the uniqueness of the design aesthetically and mechanically. Snap this puppy up while you still have the chance, ESPECIALLY when its at the $60 Friday sale price.

Other handy extras include a simple "on/off" button, easy-to-use push-button controls, a time-of-day clock, a generous carafe handle, and a drip-free spout for graceful serving. A Gold Tone filter and charcoal water filter, along with an instruction book, are included. The 1025-watt coffeemaker measures 8 by 8-3/8 by 13-7/8 inches and carries a three-year limited warranty.

I purchased this coffee maker after too many days of being the family's late riser and finding the coffee pot already drained. I have been using this pot for a couple of months now, and I am more than pleased with my purchase. This pot does hold more than the standard 10- or 12-cup coffeemaker, a great feature in a family of coffee-drinkers.

I had hoped to find a coffee-maker with a removable water reservoir to carry back and forth to the sink, which this model does not have, but even so, I give this model five stars for the excellent coffee it makes. While I have to lift the coffee-maker down from the shelf on which I keep it in order to fill the reservoir, its internal clock remains accurate even when unplugged for the short while it takes to fill the reservoir.

Some folks here have complained about the beep signaling that the element is being turned off. Even after several cups of coffee, my nerves aren't so high-strung that I even give the sound a second thought. It's quite innocuous, IMHO.

Perhaps owing to the water filter, this pot makes excellent rich-tasting coffee. It seems to brew just long enough to make perfect coffee for most folks' tastes. For stronger coffee, I can make fewer cups and use more ground coffee. If I'm really in need of a strong cuppa, I'll simply use my French press. I have never had the ground coffee overflow the filter doing this. Also, the heating element seems set to the perfect temperature, since I have never had a cup of coffee from this pot that tasted burnt...and on a number of mornings, I have barely gotten up in time to hear the beep signaling the end of hot coffee.

Best features of this machine--absolutely drip-free pot, unrivaled pure coffee taste, large capacity pot, variable settings for when the heating element will turn off, and an internal clock that retains settings with short interruptions of power. Improvements that could be made--I wish it had a removable reservoir, but the one pot that I have used that had that feature made the worst coffee I've ever made at home, not to mention the leaky pot. If you're not looking for espresso, but just a clean, pure cup of good coffee...even when "Early Bird" isn't your middle name, I think you've found what you're looking for in this machine.

Capresso 4451.01 10-Cup Glass Replacement Carafe

Capresso 4451.01 10-Cup Glass Replacement Carafe
with Lid for Capresso Coffeemaker, Black

This 10-cup glass coffee carafe functions as a replacement carafe for the Capresso CoffeeTEAM model 452, 453, 454, and Coffee/Espresso Combo 351. The glass carafe provides a snap-on lid, a generous easy-grip handle, a drip-free pour spout, and helpful measurement markings up the side. Clean the glass carafe and its lid in a solution of hot water and mild soap. For convenience, the glass carafe can be put in the dishwasher's upper level, away from any heating element (remove snap-on lid before placing in dishwasher). The replacement carafe measures approximately 8 by 6 by 4-4/5 inches.

This purchase was to replace the original carafe we had broken. The pouring lip of the replacement carafe is much better than the original carafe that came with the coffeemaker. The original carafe would drip and leak when pouring from a full carafe. The new one does not do this. I would have broken the old one a long time ago if I had known it had been improved! Worth purchasing if you have this problem.

Mr.Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker

Mr. Coffee ECM20 Steam Espresso Maker

One of the biggest complaints with this machine is that the reservoir lid is difficult to open. The manual tells you to release the remaining pressure by turning to either coffee or steamer. Then it opens easily. The knob to select steamer, off, coffee gets easier to use once it is broken in, but I agree, if your hands are not dry, it is a bit slippery.

The manual also gives clear details how to make different types of coffees and a troubleshooter. The frother makes long-lasting tasty foam, and I found the coffee to be plenty hot. I cools quickly because there is no hot plate to keep it warm, but you are only making one cup at a time--why wouldn't you drink it right away?

The coffee I liked in my previous coffee maker didn't taste the same in this machine. I had to experiment with a variety of brands and finally decided on Bustello. Someone else I talked to raved about LaVazza, but I didn't share her enthusiasm for the taste. It's all about individual preference.

I like that with one machine, My husband can make his espresso, and I can have my weaker American style coffee by simply adjusting the amount of coffee vs the water.

I have had my machine almost 6 months and my handles have not broken. Perhaps the other folks contributed to theirs breaking by banging the coffee basket against something to release the grounds. This may have weakened the handle? The glass is thin and you do need to take reasonable care not to break it. The metal parts are not Stainless Steel (except the inner grounds basket) and I found the finish on the frothing tube began wearing off (to what looks like brass or copper? ) when I used a scrubby to clean off the dried milk. I have since steamed water with it right after use, use only a sponge and finger nail to clean and have not noticed more wear.

This machine is the same one sold at Walmart as Mr. Coffee (same model #)for $25 and at Walgreen as Signature Gourmet for $20 (the one I bought). It is not going to be made with the finest materials, Folks! It does make very good coffee, is extremely affordable, simple to use, takes up minimal space on your counter and has held up almost 6 months so far. That's why I gave it 5 stars
